If your temperature gauge doesn't display the temperature at the correct normal operating level, the temperature sensor may be faulty. Especially if the Check Engine Light comes on due to temperature sensor fault code, then the temperature sensor must be replaced. This is the way I replace mine, you can use it for reference but please use it at your own risks.
Cheers and save money,
My 96 A6 Wagon ignition got stuck every morning when the weather is cold 40-50 F. Everyone seems to think it's the ignition switch. I took out the ignition switch and it's still stuck, I didn't want to break the ignition lock, I removed the ignition cable lock and the shifter lock pin to lubricate them. Guess what, the problem is gone. I still have the new ignition switch that I bought. Anyhow, the procedure that I have here is comprehensive from removing the instrument cluster to the shifter box. Please notes, this is my procedure for my car and please use it on your own risks. This is a word document, you can down load or read straight from the browser.
